Baby Changing Bags - What Are The New Styles?

By Joanne Garrett

One of the biggest maternity style trends has been the adoption of cool baby changing bags by expectant moms and new moms. Gone are the days when moms would throw baby items into whatever bag they had close by.

These new styles of baby changing bags hold their own in the fashion stakes yet are robust and large enough to be a practical option. When you are selecting a baby change bag you need to bear in mind that this is an investment buy which should not only see you through your child's early months but still be available for any later additions to the family. But when you've finished using your bag to carry baby items, the best baby changing bag will convert effortlessly into all purpose designer bag.

When you're picking your new baby changing bag there are several key style points you need to be aware of:

Fabric - you are no longer restricted to "wipe-clean vinyl" - the newest wave of change bags include bold prints and tactile fabric. Leather is the hottest trend at the moment and a leather baby change bag will not only turn heads but age well and endure the rough and tumble of the early days.

Accessories - the new style of bags include lots of accessories to make life easier for the new mum, but which can be removed when the time for fashion bag conversion arrives! Co-ordinating travel wipe holders, changing mats and insulated holders for liquids or food are handy accessories you cannot afford to be without.

One brand which has cornered the market in style and practicality is OI OI. OIOI first hit the scene with their unique Hobo baby change bag which has become a classic style in its own right. Finishing up the range this season are the messenger bag (which makes a perfect bag for Dads) and the roomy carry-all. OIOI choose their fabrics carefully including patent leather, micro fibre and wool. The standout addition this season though has to be the chestnut leather Hobo. This is a gorgeous baby changing bag in snakeskin printed leather with chunky metal hardware and an adjustable shoulder strap. Effortlessly stylish it combines the best in practical design and its cool features mean it is a perfect baby change bag for stylish mamas.

Things To Consider When Buying Toddler Toys

By Matt Safe

It is important to learn about safe toddler toys, in order to ensure that your children will be safe playing with them. Certainly all parents want to keep their children safe. But how can we know if a toy is safe?

Age recommendations are included on most toddler toys. This will give you an idea of where to begin when choosing a toy. You certainly would not want to purchase a toy which contains many small parts, and is intended for a much older child, for a toddler. These age recommendations remove the guess work for many grandparents, and others who are purchasing a gift for someone else's child.

Toys with small parts should never be given to a child under the age of three years. Children in this age group frequently put objects into their mouths. This presents a serious choking hazard. Children are very quick, and even though some people believe that they will have time to intervene if this happens, sadly, it is seldom the case. Toddlers should always be given age appropriate toys.

An important thing to remember about safe toys for toddlers, is that they should stimulate interest and curiosity, without creating frustration. Toddlers are always learning. Play is a toddler's job. If we make this job too difficult by expecting them to do what they are unable to do, they will not have fun, and they will not learn. Remember, most toddlers enjoy playing with the box as much as they do the toy.

Painted toys are a bit of a dilemma. Unfortunately, many of these toys are manufactured in countries with standards that do not meet proper safety requirements. There has in fact been an influx of painted toys containing lead paint, distributed in many places. If you decide to purchase a painted toy, you should be sure to take a look at the country where it was manufactured. Find out what the safety standards and requirements are. If you have any doubts, it is probably best not to buy the toy.

It is important that your toddler's toys are washable. Again, small children tend to put everything into their mouths. Germs can be very quickly spread, through a contaminated toy which has not been properly cleaned. Toys which are made out of fabric, must be both washable, and flame resistant.

Always be sure to check out the length of any strings or pull cords on all toys. If they are long enough to be wrapped around a child's neck, then you will want to avoid this toy. Balloons and small balls should never be given to children who are under three years old. When they are given to four and five year olds, they should still be closely supervised. A child of any age who puts balloons in or near the mouth should not be allowed to have them, as this may present a serious choking hazard.

A little bit of knowledge about safe toddler toys, can make a huge difference in your child's happiness and safety.

Ways To Help Your Kid Stop Sucking His Thumb

By Margaret Sounders

As children grow during their first few years, may of them will start sucking their thumbs or fingers. There are a number of reasons why babies and toddlers do this. First, infants enjoy putting nearly everything in the mouths, so this is a natural extension of that habit. Second, it's worth remembering that babies find it calming. Sometimes, it's their way of gaining a level of comfort in unfamiliar environments. Other times, it has a relaxing sensation; it reminds them of being within the womb and often helps them go to sleep more easily.

Whatever the reason that triggers the habit, parents may eventually need to take steps to prevent it. If a toddler continues to suck his thumb, it can affect the development of his mouth and jaw as well as the manner in which his teeth align. And the more intense the sucking, the greater likelihood of potential dental issues. Today's article will provide a few quick tips for helping your little one kick the habit.

Encourage Rather Than Scold

Most young children develop a sense of independence. By the time they're four or five, that independence often manifests as a desire to appear mature. This is an opportunity to let your child know how proud he makes you feel. Focus on the items that he no longer needs or uses, such as a comfort blanket, diapers, or even a pacifier. Then, suggest that he considers giving up his thumb on his road to maturity. This method is usually far more effective than scolding.

Ask Your Pediatrician To Intervene

When you visit your doctor, it's natural to believe she knows what she's talking about. You trust her advice. For example, if she suggests that you make a certain lifestyle change, you'll listen because your doctor is an authoritative figure. Your toddler learns to respect authority in the same way. If he hears from the pediatrician that he should give up thumb sucking, he may be more inclined to follow the advice.

Point It Out

The habit can be so strongly ingrained in a toddler's mind that he may not even realize he's doing it. He may need you to point it out for him. Come up with a simple, yet fun way that you can let him know he's doing it without saying anything to him. For example, tell him that whenever he sees you touching the tip of your nose, it means he has started to suck again. Not only does this remove his expectation of being scolded, but it also eliminates any shame he may feel if caught.

A majority of toddlers lose interest in sucking their thumbs long before their parents need to intervene. That said, if the habit sticks, use the tips above to help your little one break it.

What You Need to Know About Residential Stair Lifts

By Max Minton

A residential stair lift can be of great benefit to those that use a wheelchair for mobility, as traditional stairs can be a trying experience.

Basically there are three ways to deal with the issue of wheelchair mobility in a home with steps. A ramp system might be the first option you consider, but often the floor plan and design of the home make it difficult or impossible to install. Secondly, an elevator sounds like a good choice, but is very expensive.

The third solution, a residential stair lift, creates a happy medium between the two. A stair lift will save you from the expense of an elevator and at the same time, it is a solution that can be implemented in practically any stair situation.

You can find two types of residential stair lifts, vertical and horizontal. Both lifts will operate similarly. If you are using a wheelchair, a platform will allow you to use the stair lift and the access ramp will fold up for increased security during your ascent or decent.

To reach the floor or level you are interested in visiting, you use a push button. Holding down the button will propel the ramp in the direction you desire. Quickly pushing and releasing the button will allow you to safely direct the ramp where you need it to go.

Inclined platforms are preferred by most wheelchair users because they can easily be customized for different staircases by using tracks that are attached to either pillars or staircase walls. The inclined platform has tracks and a platform that are attached to the wall or stair steps. It is quite easy to customize to suit your specific staircase and is the preferred choice of most wheelchair users.

A vertical lift platform resembles an elevator, but you do not need to cut holes in the floor of a room above or below in order to use it. You can find a vertical lift platform in either an open or a closed variety, depending upon your preference.

Depending on your requirements, there are numerous residential stair lifts available. Installation of a stair lift will allow you to navigate the change in floor levels without difficulty. Climbing stairs no longer has to be an impediment for you.

Thoughts About Choosing a Baby Monitor

By Josephine Archibald

In todays society a baby monitor is pretty much a must have tool if you are about to have a baby or if you have a very young child already. The baby monitor will alert you to when baby is needing fed, or changed and in general provides you with peace of mind while you get on with other chores etc around the home.

What we have to consider when thinking about purchasing a baby monitor are, among other things:

- what is your budget

- type of property the baby monitor will be used in

- if you wish to see your child you will need an audio monitor with video capabilities

What Type of Monitor is There?

- Audio: the most basic monitor will offer audio alone.

- Movement with audio capability: this type consists of three parts " the receiver, the transmitter and a detector pad which is placed under the babies mattress

- Audio with video capability: in addition to some of the above features this type offers a video camera which can be placed near to your baby. Some of the more expensive types now offer infra red, which allows you to see your child in the dark.

Important Things to Consider

- Source of power: the battery operated monitors provide for more mobility but can use a lot of batteries to power up. The best ones then offer a combination of both a/c adapter plugs and batteries or use rechargeable batteries.

- Volume controls: this can be useful when you do not wish to hear every single sound that your little one makes.

- LED lights on the receiver: this can be useful when you are unable to hear the receiver. If your child wakes for example then any noise will be shown by the LED lights flashing.

- Multi-channel option: this will allow you to find a channel that has the least interference in your area. Interference is often caused by mobile/cellular and cordless phones.

- Choice of frequency: very handy ability to choose from a variety of frequencies. This will mean there is less chance of static interference in the signal you receive. The basic baby monitor offers 49 MHz which will be at the cheaper end. Allowing for better options is the 900 MHz monitor and then even better at the top of the range is the 2.4 GHz option.

- Low battery indicator " vitally important if using a battery operated monitor.

- Size: if you move around a lot then a receiver that can be easily carried around with you is ideal. Also, if you travel often with your child its important to have a baby monitor that is light weight and easily packed.

- A two-receiver option: if you like the idea of having one receiver static " in your bedroom for example, so you dont have to go looking for the receiver you left some place earlier on " then the two-receiver option is a good choice.

Understanding ADHD

By Anne Durrell

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a behavioral disorder. It can cause impulsive actions, hyperactivity and the inability to focus or concentrate.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can affect both adults and children. To find out what is ADHD, you have to understand the symptoms, and the affects as well as the way it is treated.

The Warning Signs

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder warning signs can be confusing since many of the symptoms are just natural behaviors that children show in childhood. The difference between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms and natural behavior, though, is that in a kid with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder the behavior are showed frequently on a regular basis.

Finding the Right Baby Crib Bedding

By Dorothea Frankson

Before I go any further, I would like to bring up a point that many parents overlook. Crib bedding (especially crib sets for girls!) is adorable and can seem like a vital necessity. You need to realize, though, that there are suffocation risks associated with infant bedding. A firm mattress and tight-fitting sheets should be used to help prevent an accident in the crib.

Keep pillows, stuffed animals, and even fluffly bedding like comforters out of the crib. Newborns should be dressed warmly rather than covering them with blankets.

Bedding sets are the way to go for most parents - it makes choosing the bedding much simpler. There has been a boom in character-themed sets, but many parents are still opting for less commercial choices, like

paisley print crib bedding. Once you know what you want to buy, you can be sure you'll find it online.

To make things easy on yourself, be sure to figure out generally what you're looking for, before you begin your hunt for infant bedding. Have you picked a particular theme? Will the bedding fot your crib? Think about the wall color you've chosen - will your bedding match it? You will need to think about all of these factors before you start looking.

There are numerous reasons why you should buy your bedding online. If you're having trouble deciding, just check out a couple of different stores and you'll have lots of ideas. Be sure to compare prices and look for deals, because decorating a nursery is not cheap.

You might think you can get a better price at a department store than online, but this is usually not the case. If you're uncertain, just go to a local store and check their prices - I bet you'll find they're much higher than what you've seen online.
