Tips for Effortlessly Planning a Successful Baby Shower

By Edie Mindell

Planning a baby shower can and should be one of the most exciting and enjoyable moments of a mommy-to-be's life. From personalizing the perfect invitations to choosing the right location for the shower, hosting a baby shower should be fun and entertaining. When planning a baby shower, it is important to keep in mind that the event should be both memorable and unforgettable for the expectant mother; she should enjoy every second of the planning process, as well as the event. Opening the newborn baby gifts is always the highlight of the shower and the other festivities are just as fun.

Organization and dedication are key in the preparation of a successful baby shower. It is key to follow a step-by-step process with a lot of time and patience, in order to have the best results for the joyous occasion. A baby shower planning book or even a simple notebook is a great tool to have throughout your journey of planning the ideal baby shower. By the end of the planning stage, you will have written numerous itineraries and lists that will arrange all your tasks into a simple, easy-to-follow process.

The first step when planning a baby shower is to create a guest list. The guest list will give you an overall idea of the size of the baby shower, an estimate for the number of party favors and amount of food, and a ballpark figure for your budget. Write down the names, addresses, and phone numbers of your guests, so that you can keep track of your RSVP's and have all the information for sending thank you cards after the baby shower. Make sure to have accurate and updated addresses and phone numbers for all your guests.

After the approximate number of guests is set, the next step is to determine the extent of your budget. The number of guests will be important in determining the location of the baby shower. A small number of guests does not demand a lot of space, and can be held at a restaurant, or even a home. A large number of guests can be held at a large restaurant or a ballroom. Be sure to visit several locations and keep your options open, before determining the perfect party place that will suit your needs!

The most fun part of planning the baby shower is to choose a fun and exciting theme that you and your guests will enjoy. Popular themes include "Noah's Ark," "Pink Tea," "Sweet Dreams," and the classic "Its-a-Boy" and "Its-a-Girl." After you pick the ultimate party theme, decide on your menu, decorations, and supplies. Menus can be appetizers or full meals. Restaurants will often offer specials for events like baby showers, and even may work around your theme to accommodate your party needs. Decorations should be fun, exciting, and colorful. The decorations will affect the overall mood and tone of your shower. Remember to be creative and to choose a theme that you absolutely love. The best themes are original and unique. Knowing in advance what gender the baby will be will allow folks to buy the appropriate gifts.

Now that all the basic elements have been arranged, find games and activities that your guests will enjoy. Pick a couple of classics, and come up with some on your own. Be original and innovative! Now, pick the date and time for your special day, and be sure to send out invitations about two months before the baby shower. Good luck!

Protecting Children with Mental Health Problems

By Marion Jones

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves, and so on. Predators often have mental problems that prevent them from functioning properly in normal society. Children with mental disorders are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators themselves. In fact, the creator of one of the most dangerous viruses online came from an eighteen-year old from England.

Dangers mental illnesses: Not everyone with a mental disorder is a danger to society. In general, predators with mental illnesses are the victims of sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental illnesses that present a threat to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that wait on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, since many mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children abide by and stick to the rules. Do not leave room for leniency when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental illnesses will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it harder as a parent to protect your child. However, it is important that you enforce the rules. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these rules, since some children with dangerous problems may cause you harm.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring the police in and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may pay court fees and go through headaches, but I promise you it will benefit you in the end. As a mother raising two boys with dangerous mental illnesses, I can tell you it isn't simple, but it can be done.

Children with mental illnesses often have brilliant minds that can usually get past any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take more time than normal to monitor your child's activity online. Teach your child that giving out personal details is dangerous and encourage them to request your permission when considering giving name, phone number or other details online.

Allow your child to take some responsibility for himself and always encourage your child to join in family discussions that concern them. Furthermore, encourage the child to be safety conscious by telling them to report any misdemeanour committed against them.

One of the hardest things you'll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health issues is encouraging him/her to avoid from violent images and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them away from this rubbish. However, it can be done, if you set a good example for the child.

It is vital that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories et cetera without demeaning the child. You will be amazed at the wisdom children with some mental illnesses have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can give you for dealing with children with major mental disorders, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety tips for children with mental disorders seek advice from a qualified counsellor.

Note Well: Children learn what they see and hear.

VA Aid and Attendance Program Details

By Brian Johnson

Aid and Attendance is a special pension program offered to war-time veterans that served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days being served during war time.

What Aid and Attendance provides veterans and their spouses with is the ability to pay for assistance that may be needed in the home. Certain income requirements must be met, which basically means that low income veterans will be able to benefit from Aid and Attendance significantly, as well as veterans who properly structure their assets. Even if nursing home assistance is needed, the VA Aid and Attendance program will be able to pay for that. All you have to do is qualify.

As long as the veteran meets the service requirements for the Aid and Attendance program, and it has been determined there is a medical need for care, the veteran can apply for the Aid and Attendance program. There are however financial restrictions on those who qualify for the program, and many times veterans with higher levels of assets will need to seek help with asset structuring to qualify for the program.

For 2009 the maximum annual benefit for those qualifying for the Aid & Attendance level of pension is:

Surviving Spouse of a Veteran: $12,681

Veteran with no Spouse or dependent children: $19,736

A married Veteran where the Veteran requires care: $23,396

If the Veteran is healthy, but their Spouse requires care, then the Veteran qualifies for a regular pension only: $15,493

The ultimate purpose of the Aid & Attendance pension benefit is to provide veterans or their surviving spouses with additional resources so that they can afford care in their time of need.

The Aid and Attendance pension program is certainly unique in that it is specific in what it provides veterans and their spouses. That is why it is important to meet all of the specifications set forth by the VA for the Aid and Attendance program. Unfortunately, there are individuals not aware of this pension program and how it can help them take care of home health and nursing home costs.

Caution Pays: Finding the Right Baby Bedding Set

By Dorothea Frankson

With just about any theme, style, and color combination you can dream of available for your baby's nursery and bedding, it's no wonder that so many new parents get confused about how to decorate their nursery. If you want animals, you can find everything from caterpillar baby crib bedding to mystical creatures. Angels are another popular theme, both for shoppers and designers. There are hundreds of different bedding sets to choose from. The more popular the theme, the worse it gets. Don't even get me started on nursery rhymes or cartoon characters!

Whether it's boy nursery bedding or baby girl, you might be tempted to buy everything you can afford - after all, they're all so darn cute! To be a bit blunt, that designer bedding set you paid $1000 for is going to go through the same spitup and diaper leaks as a $200 set. So here are a few suggestions for things your baby will need:

- Think twice before installing bumper pads - they may not be as useful as you think. While it's understandable that parents want to protect their newborns from bumping against the hard railings of their cribs, bumper pads can pose a far more serious suffocation risk. To be safe, it's best to just keep bumpers out of the crib altogether, or at least until your baby reaches birthday number one. If you decide to keep them in anyway, make sure the ties are on the outside of the crib and very securely tied.

- You won't find sheet sets for cribs, because babies don't use flat sheets or pillowcases, just the fitted sheet. When buying crib sheets, make sure they fit your mattress properly. If they are too big or too small, they may come free from the mattress and pose a suffocation risk. Diaper leaks are inevitable so consider a mattress protector and avoid white sheets!

- As far as blankets go, babies don't need to be any warmer than adults, and loose blankets can also cause problems. Stick with a sleep sack instead. Stuffed animals and pillows are dangerous so take them out of the crib.

When choosing a crib set, be sure that it's safe, then pick something cute - you don't need to sacrifice one for the other.

Child Crib Bedding: Moses Basket Reliability is Pivotal

By Dorothea Frankson

We are used to throwing away everything, but for some reason we want to keep our baby's items forever. Even so, when you are expecting a baby, people can't wait to pass on their cribs and crib bedding. You will appreciate these offers of baby bedding and cribs since babies can cost a lot of money. First verify whether the bedding is safe. Then you may use it for the child.

Whether it is a Moses basket or baby crib, there is something very special about your child's first bed. Hand-me-down beds need to be checked for safety issues first, then take some time to refinish them to make them special for your little one. You may have new looking bedding and crib, but you must always check them for safety purposes. Wicker cradles or cribs can chip and splinter very easily so it's always a good idea to triple check them for sharp edges and it's always a good idea to replace the mattress because it may not be holding up as well as it should. When you fit the skirt, see that there are no loose ends or things that can go into the mouth of the baby.

When you are putting up new drapes, check to see that there are no loose threads or dangling material that a baby might be able to get a hold of and put in his/her mouth. Purchase new bedding for your crib if you are able to because the majority of organizations that are concerned about the safety of baby furniture, such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer's Association (JPMA) in the United States and British Standards (BS) in the UK have advised consumers to purchase new furniture and bedding, if at all possible. The products displaying either the JPMA stamp of endorsement or the BS 'Kite' symbol have been put to the test to ensure that they satisfy all of the proper safety standards.

I don't have a problem with hand-me-downs myself; I just make sure to thoroughly inspect them for safety. Anyway, it isn't good for the environment to throw away perfectly decent furniture and baby bedding. Your baby will spend many hours in his crib, so it is important to carefully examine and test it for safety. It's extremely vital to go over your baby equipment checking for safety issues, and here are some guidelines for you to follow. The most important issue is that of paint, check for lead paint, and any chipped or peeling pieces and that the surface is smooth to the touch to prevent baby's clothes from catching. Most importantly check the bars of the crib to assure that they are closer than 2 3/8 inches apart. The header and footer boards need to be solid having no holes, this will protect your infant from getting his/her head caught. To prevent the child's crib from shaking or wobbling, always be sure to check for tight joints and fixings. You should be able to raise and lower the side rails with one hand and the rails must be secure when raised. The mattress should be solid and clean and the side rails of the crib should be no less than 22 inches higher than the crib mattress.

I will always buy a new, snug fit mattress for a new baby. Nursery bedding can be dangerous so it is important to make sure that all the bumpers strings are tied down or just remove the bumper completely. For babies under a year old, overheating can be caused by using duvets, quilts, sheepskin, and pillows. Place a thermometer in the room in addition to using a combination of blankets and sheets. Babies are very quick little creatures, take climbing for example, before you know it they will have mastered the talent, that is why one should keep cords, lamps, window blinds/curtains and other pieces of furniture out of reach of the crib.

Always remember to enjoy every moment with your baby, they grow up before you even realize it.

Baby High Chairs - Wood Makes Good Style Sense

By Ned Dagostino

Wooden high chairs are making a comeback in a big way. The metal chairs and plastic chairs are gradually losing their popularity to the wooden versions. This is because wooden high chairs go well with the rest of the wooden furniture in the house.

The classic elegance of wood cannot be matched by other modern materials like metal or plastic. The best houses are furnished in wood. Now if you introduce a gaudy plastic or metal high chair into this well-furnished setting, the whole carefully crafted ambience will go kaput!

Wooden high chairs fit right in with the furniture and the decor of your dining room. Popular choices for dining room furniture are oak, maple, and cherry. High chairs are easily available in these woods, with the finish to match the other furniture. They come in various styles from antique to modern. Wooden high chairs have a charm of their own. They age gracefully. This makes them ideal candidates to be passed on to coming generations as family heirlooms.

Now that the aesthetic appeal is taken care of, check the functional aspect of the wooden high chair. It is advisable to get a high chair with a front tray that can be manipulated with a single hand. Though a plastic food tray is convenient to keep clean, a wooden tray is just as easy to clean with a damp cloth after every meal.

The most important feature that you should look for in a high chair is safety. The high chair should be stable enough, so that it doesn't topple over when the baby starts moving about in it. It should have a full body harness to keep the child from sliding right out of the seat. Make sure that the chair is durable and sturdy. You don't want it to fall apart after just a few months!

On the downside, a wooden high chair lacks some conveniences that are common on the plastic and metal versions. Castor-mounting is one such convenience that's missing. Pushing the chair around a carpeted area will be difficult. You can't tilt the back to put the chair into a reclining position, nor will you be able to adjust the height of the chair to suit different situations. You may also miss out on the toys that are usually attached to the dining tray in the plastic and metal high chairs.

To get a good bargain in a wooden high chair, you'll have to be diligent in analyzing the products on the market, especially the range you're interested in. Make a list of the features you absolutely require, then the features that are of secondary importance. Use this to evaluate the different high chair models available to you.

If you don't require a wooden high chair right away, take this opportunity to prepare yourself for that event, because sooner or later you will get a wooden high chair for your baby. You can now afford to take your time over the pros and cons of a wooden high chair. If you postpone the analysis to the last minute you won't have much time to recast your decisions and may make a number of rash choices. So make the best use of the tips given above and buy a beautiful, functional, and durable high chair for your loved one!
