Earn a CPR Certification Online

By Samantha H. Kiva

During my last year in High School I took a CPR Class. It was not because I wanted to learn CPR or any other life saving skills. I was short credits to pass my Physical Education class.

Liking easy classes, I signed up for a CPR course I found online. It was only an hour and I figured it would be quick and easy. During the course, I learned just how valuable this class could be.

I came to believe this class should not only be mandatory for students, but a class that every parent should take. I was surprised to not only learn Adult CPR but also Child CPR and Infant CPR.

I remembered back to a day when I was babysitting my 2 year old niece. She was eating candy and began to choke. We were both in a panic and she could not breathe. I was young and did not know CPR, First Air, AED or anything. I just panicked. We were lucky, she coughed up the candy and was fine.

My wish is you never have to go though this feeling of exposure. What could you do? Would you know how to act? Could you help?

I happy to report there are several online options to learn CPR or First Air.

Becoming CPR certified is serious. With is easy to learn skill you may be able to save a life. Think about it all your family members and friends that you love. Who could you help by knowing CPR.

So what are you waiting for? Make a pledge to take a class and be able to save a life. Learn CPR, First Aid or AED as soon as possible. The National CPR Certification Organization has made it quick and easy to take these classes. At many websites you can learn more about understanding this wonderful skill.

Find out more and find the right CPR class for you. Call the National CPR Certification Organization or see their website: http://nationalcprcertification.com/

Grandparent's Visitation Hindered By U.S. Supreme Court

By Jon D. Alexander, Esq.

My name is Jon D. Alexander, Esq. and I am an Orange County, California Divorce Attorney. This article is the eleventh article in a series outlining the divorce process in California. Please be aware that this article is not intended as and should not be relied upon as legal advice or as the creation of an attorney-client relationship.

In our last article we discussed non-parental rights to child custody and the seminal case in this area Troxel vs. Granville. After Troxel, several California family code statutes are likely invalid including: (1) Section 3100 allows courts to grant reasonable visitation rights to "any person" having an interest in the welfare of the child; (2) Section 3101, which provides that step-parents may visit if it is in the best interests of the child; (3) Section 3102 that lets "close relatives" of a deceased parent have visitation rights if in the best interests of a child. Statutes that will withstand scrutiny after Troxel include Family Code section 3104 and 3103

Kyle O. vs. Donald R. is an illustrative case, where the mother was dying and her parents requested visitation. Visitation for the grandparents was ordered. Mother then died, and grandparents sought to protect their visitation rights under section 3102. Trial court granted visitation but was later reversed on appeal.

The appellate court held Section 3102 unconstitutional in light of Troxel. Court held that if a parent who is fit (mentally sound) and offers access to child (some visitation) that parent can say when and where visitation will occur. Family Code section 3102 simply doesn't apply unless (1) a parent is deemed to be unfit; (2) access has been denied; and (3) the best interest of the child outweigh the presumption favoring the parent's decision about visitation. The Court in Kyle O. relied heavily upon the fact that access be offered by the parent.

In Punsely v. Ho (Punsely I.), child is born in 1990. Father dies and Father's parents lose access to child. Grandparents seek Section 3102 access. Court orders access. Troxel is then decided. Mother brings an appeal based on Troxel; the appellate court holds that Troxel bars Section 3102 access. The bottom line is that when a fit parent offers access (of some sort) the grandparents will not be able to overcome the presumption (that the parents make visitation decisions) only by showing parental hostility towards them.

In In re Marriage of Harris, mother did let grandparents visit but, after Troxel, she ends visitations, but doesn't prevent all contact with grandparents. Trial court rules that mother's opinions on the subject are not motivated by hate or spite. Ultimately the court rules that it is simply "better" for the children to see the grandparents, and allows access.

In Harris the court decided that unless a court order was in place mandating the Grandparent's visitation, mother would've allowed the relationship to wither away until it was nonexistent. Court also recognized that the Grandparents were going out of their way to make an effort to keep the relationship alive. And the trial court finally ruled that visitation with the Grandparents was in the best interests of the children. On appeal, however, the appellate court overruled the trial court and held that Troxel abrogated all of the trial courts findings.

After Harris the burden to establish non-parental visitation under section 3140 is much higher than that under Troxel. Prior contact with the child by grandparents isn't enough to satisfy the burden. In fact, appellate courts are not remanding cases with instructions to the trial court to consider the issues discussed in Harris, the appellate courts are simply overruling any visitation ordered pursuant to section 3102 or 3104.

Whether visitation was sometimes offered issue was not touched upon in Harris, at this point, however, it appears that it's not all that important to a grandparent's petition. What is important is mental health evidence. Whether it will be enough for a grandparent to establish that it is in the child's best interests is enough by itself is unclear, but it is an essential component for success for the grandparent.

The bottom line for Grandparents seeking visitation is that they have an uphill battle and because of Troxel they probably will not succeed when against parental wishes. Therefore, it is incumbent upon Grandparents to understand the power that the parents have when it comes to visitation. And it is essential to remember to be diplomatic when dealing with the parents or when discussing the parents with anyone (especially the child) because an unhappy parent has the ability to cut off their visitation. Grandparents should also know that there is potential liability in the form of attorney's fees if they become involved in these proceedings. If they have money and the parent does not, there is a real risk that they will be ordered to pay parent's attorney's fees.

In my next article, we will continue with more California cases that illustrate the impact of Troxel. In the meantime, if you have any divorce or family law related questions please contact me at your convenience. You can reach me directly at my website linked below or you may email me Jon at oc-familylawyers.com.

Tips to Ensure Quality Family Time At The Dinner Table

By Carol Ann

When so many people are leading busy lives, it is essential that they family sit down together to enjoy dinner. As children, our mothers and father made sure that we were at the table for dinner each night. On Sundays, it was customary to not only sit with our immediate family but with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents as well. Every got together and shared a meal, company and conversations.

In today's world, many families no longer have these time honored tradition and customs. We have become a fast food generation, where it is easier to have someone cook for us then to work together as a family. With the way things are currently going in the world, I can think of no better time to bring these traditions back into our lives. Just think, a home cooked meal, with the possibilities of left overs for later in the week, can save lots a money and get the family back around the dinner table.

Contrary to belief, sitting down for a family dinner does not mean making a microwave meal and watching it in front of the television. It requires everyone at the table, a home cooked meal and conversations. Families with older, more independent children, may find this unrealistic to do each night but here are some tips for accomplishing the task more often then you currently do.

First, don't expect it to happen every night, set up a time ahead of time so that everyone is prepared to sit down and spend time at the table. Second, get the kids involved. Little kids love to help, even if you think that it would be easier without their "help", let them. They think that they are helping and that is all that matters. Let the older kids help plan the meal, it works for the younger kids too. If they are able to help pick out the meal, they are more likely to want and participate in the eating of the meal.

A third helpful tip is to pick food that the children enjoy to eat. This is not giving them permission to eat pizza or chicken nuggets each night, as there are a wide variety of healthy foods out there for children to enjoy. Although you do not want to force them to eat something, as this makes for an unpleasant situation for all, you should insist that they at least try everything before deciding they do not like it. The rule in my home is that you need to eat a small serving of whatever is cooked for dinner and then if you truly do not like it, you can have something else the next time the dinner is prepared. My youngest son, for instance, does not like baked potatoes so so when I make them for dinner I take one and make mashed potatoes out them for him.

Easy To Make Baby Blankets - Sure To Be A Big Hit At The Baby Shower!

By Tracey Dornelles

Baby showers are such an exciting event on the pregnancy calendar and of course one of the most important parts of the day is opening the presents. You hear all the Oohs and Aaahs when the expectant mum unwraps all the gorgeous little gifts.

So the biggest question before you go to one of these special occasions is what to take as a present. Well, I have been to quite a few baby showers in my time and whenever anyone gives a hand-made present an extra special fuss is made over it because everyone realises what thought and effort went into making it.

Plus you get the credit for a handmade present for years to come. I have personally made blankies for a few baby showers and a long time later I still get praise for my craftiness. Youre Aunty Tracey made that for you.

But seriously don't get too freaked out, thinking "I can't knit like Grandma" or I'm not crafty like Aunty Sue", because I have the EASIEST baby gift you can make, but the best thing is it looks gorgeous too!

UNIQUE BLANKIES!

STEP 1: Find some pretty flannelet material at a fabric shop.

STEP 2: Choose different fabrics so you can make it look different on each side. Mix and match and have some fun. Maybe pink stripes on one side and yellow butterflies on the other. Perhaps go unisex if you're not sure if the baby is a boy or girl.

STEP 3: Buy fabric 1.2 metres in length

STEP 4: Go home and get set up at a flat table. Pin the fabric together on all sides with the patterns facing each other.

STEP 5: Try and sew a STRAIGHT lines on each side, but remember to leave a gap of about 10 cm on one side.

STEP 6: Turn the fabric out the right way so the pattern is on the outside.

STEP 7: Now arrange the hole neatly so the edges are tucked in and iron it to stay flat.

STEP 8: Sew 2 lines around the edge of the blanket. One line is so the gap is sewn up and the other is just to make the border of the blanket to look pretty.

If youre a bit more experienced or brave then experiment with different border stitching.

STEP 9: You're done with the sewing! YAY! Now fold the blanket nicely and add a pretty bow.

STEP 10: Give your special handmade blankie and watch her face as she realizes youve taken the time and effort to make her special little baby a truly unique present.

Get Into Stanford: Taking A Year After 12th Grade

By John Chang

A reader who wanted to do some volunteer work in Africa before reapplying to an Ivy League school recently asked me this question. He wondered if the volunteer work would make him a more desirable candidate.

My response was, "Yes, perhaps."

Why "possible" and not "definitely"?

Well, there are quite a few factors to take into consideration. Here are a few things you should think about when considering a gap year:

#1 Taking a year off is like participating in summer activities. It will only help you if you are very, very busy doing really worthwhile things the whole time.

#2 The volunteer work, activity, or program you are engaged in must be a puzzle piece that helps you create your total picture. It must contribute to the overall image you want to present when you apply to an Ivy League School. So, for example, if you are interested in global warming, taking a year to study Norwegian climate patterns would make sense.

Third: Understand that a gap year really only lasts about six months, so don't over commit your time. You will have from the time you graduate from high school in the late spring until the time you submit your Common Applications near the end of the calendar year to complete your tasks and add them to the Common Applications.

Click here for more info on Harvard and Stanford waitlists.

#4 Your total application must be strong in order for a gap year to do you good. If you have negligible extracurricular activities, low grades, poor transcripts, and/or low SATs, a gap year will not fix problems with your application.

Keep these four factors in mind when you are when you are weighing the strengths and weaknesses of for your dad's textile sales company for a year before applying to Ivy League schools.

In the final analysis, a gap year may be helpful. However, you must be sure that you are a strong candidate in other areas to begin with and that your gap year only strengthens your candidacy.

For personal development, a gap year can be a very good thing. If you need a break from academic life, taking a gap year is a good way to make it productive. Bear in mind, though, that a gap year will not guarantee that you will be admitted to the school of your choice.

Senior Home Care Services Has Tremendous Advantages Over Nursing Homes

By Doug Thomas

As the United States population grows older, the focus on the extent of required services will have to align with the quality of the care produced. Over time a spotlight has been placed on how well residents who are placed in a care facility are treated. Some know that the type of care a person receives depends on how much loved ones are involved.

Some mature children have difficulty with placing their senior parents in a nursing home because of the negative press. Expenditure is also a part in making this decision. An alternative to nursing homes is senior home care services, which allow a person to stay put in their home and receive the level of care that they will need.

Along with determining the price and care, the types of elderly home care services are special based on an individuals need. Insurance companies have sought ways to lessen the costs of hospitalization and treatment services, which has opened the door for service providers who focus in giving these services at an individuals residence. This decreases health care costs and allows an older adult to remain in their homes. The home care landscape has shifted into a full-fledged industry, giving more options for people to choose from.

The advantages of receiving home care services rather than living in a nursing home cannot be underestimated. The cognitive portion of being able to maintain some level of independence can go a long way to improving the superiority of life for several elder adults.

Most elderly only require aid with regular, daily tasks which may include transportation to doctors appointments, grocery shopping, or bathing. Still, others may require more steady management, depending on their sickness and how far it has developed.

A person who obtains senior home care services can have more private consideration than someone who lives in a nursing home. In a nursing home, an inadequate amount of personnel must attend to a number of different people with varying levels of help. Receiving care at home can cost less than it does in a nursing home because of faculty costs that are factored into nursing homes.

The once a year costs of a nursing home change by state, but in most cases, the costs far exceed the average earnings of many older adults. Those with Medicare shortly find out that it simply covers a minute piece of long-term care, and that coverage is inadequate to the kind and amount of days. The people that cannot find the money to supplement the costs of a nursing home may want to give home care services serious contemplation.

What You Need to Know About Early Signs of Pregnancy and Symptoms of Pregnancy

By Josephine Archibald

Symptoms of pregnancy can bring about elation in the expecting parents but its not all plain sailing even from the very beginning. The expecting mother will have to deal with a variety of changes in her body so its good to have some basic understanding as to what could happen and why it does.

Pregnancy can obviously take its toll emotionally as well as physically. You may feel really excited and positive one moment then the next exhausted and worried. With such emotions to deal with regularly it can lead to stress levels increasing.

There are lots of things to consider after becoming pregnant so its no wonder that at times you will feel worried and upset about seemingly small matters.

All sorts of questions are likely going through the expectant mothers mind and for that matter, father too will have his concerns and worries to deal with.

Within the initial two weeks just after conception a hormonal trigger is set, which will then allow for mums body to start with the nourishment of the baby, which will happen previous to any type of examination can confirm pregnancy. The most common physical changes include the following:

1.Increases in the amount of urination. Because the uterus can start to press upon the bladder in the early months of pregnancy, the frequency of urination increases. Please be aware that urinary tract infections increase in such circumstances. It may be wise to wear panty liners to reduce embarrassing situations and to reduce any discomfort.

2.Nausea. Vomiting, queeziness and nausea are caused again by hormonal changes and can be reduced by eating small meals frequently throughout the day. Ginger in tea or ale is a good aid, as it can be when added to your cooking.

3.High fatigue levels. The body will be producing more blood as a measure to support the pregnancy and as such the heart will be pumping faster and the pulse rises. While at the same time more intense emotions do affect energy levels. Rest often and ensure a good intake of both protein and iron. Have a brisk walk each and every day or increase your physical activity in other gentle ways.

4.Dizziness. Energy levels and blood sugar levels will rapidly change bringing about the possible onset of occasional dizziness. In this situation, try to avoid standing still for long. Keep healthy snacks close by to help maintain blood sugar levels. These can include low-fat yogurt and dried fruits for example. If dizziness is persistent then do consult your physician.

5.Breast sensitivity increase. Again, increased hormonal activity is often the cause of this symptom where the breasts will feel more full and heavier. A good fitting bra that offers good levels of support can help to somewhat alleviate sensitivity in the breasts.

A Guide To Time Management For Mums Who Work From Home

By Tracey Dornelles

After about 9 months off work due to the birth of my first baby I was ready to tackle that world again. I was a little hesitant though because I had already tried to go back to my old career a few months earlier which turned out to be a disaster. My baby girl and I were definitely not ready to handle the pressures of reality and it stressed us both out. So, here I was a few months later, a little bit wiser and armed with a new idea to try an online career from home instead.

An online career from home sounds like a dream for many mums and it really is for me now, but like with any new venture it had it's challenges in the beginning.

I guess you always have to expect an adjustment period when you add a new challenge into the mix. Before I started my business I had the responsibility of looking after the baby, doing some of the housework, playing at the park and some cooking. But now add keeping clients happy and learning about internet marketing - some days felt a bit overwhelming.

So, I took a step back and started talking to some other successful work-at-home mums and asked them how they are managing to be a Super-Mum? And you know what the answer was from all of them? I'M NOT! . But they also had another common theme - Good Time Management.

For many of you Time Management may be a pretty obvious solution, but I swear that "Baby Brain" kind of thinking hadn't really worn off yet. Sometimes you just need someone to spell it out for you. So from that day on I decided to get better organised:

1. Wrote out a FLEXIBLE daily plan " Babies aren't really into plans, but they do actually like routine, so if you set their day up they seem to be more confident about when its time to play/eat/sleep etc.

2. Next thing to do it set a goal for how many hours you'd liek to work each day. You may have to adjust this as you settle into a routine. I aim for 4-5 hours a day spread out over day and night, but only for 4 days a week, but often that will spread out to 5 days. Think about maybe a relative like your Mum or mother in-law who will act as a babysitter once or twice a week for a few hours.

3. A typical day:

8am - 11:30am Breakfast time and play time in the mornings. We play, get dressed, eat all together and in this time I check a few things so I know what's ahead in my day. I may answer some emails etc. while my daughter is playing around me. I don't do any serious work at this time, because it's still really baby time. We'll also probably do some housework or cook something for later.

11:30 - 1:30pm This is my most productive work time most days because my daughter sleeps. I try and stay focused at the task at hand and leave any unfinished housework or cooking etc. as this is purely WORK TIME.

1:30pm - 4:30pm This is MOTHER-DAUGHTER time! We will go to the park, go shopping, mothers group or just go visiting a friend. Whatever! Some days I don't get out of the house, but I try not to stress about it too much because at this age shes still interested in helping mummy hang out washing and chase after the cat!

4:30pm - 5:30pm Afternoon naps can sometimes be 30 minutes and if I'm lucky 1 hour. In this time I go back into my office and check emails and do anything that can be done relatively quickly. I never start big projects at this time.

5:30pm - 7:30pm Most households are a bit crazy at this time and mine is no different. It's bath-time, dinner-time, (screaming time!) and sleep-time all at once.

7:30pm Onwards: My husband goes to Jiu Jitsu a few nights a week, so depending what night it is I sometimes work a few more hours. I may train some new people or some up with some new marketing ideas.

If my days don't go to plan, I just focus on the good things that did happen that day. Was it that I was able to watch my gorgeous little girl having an awesome time on the swings? Or was I in fits of laughter while she chased the cat around the house all while throwing clothes everywhere.

Just think how lucky we are to have the choice to be able to spend our time with our precious little ones. They grow sssssooooooo quickly, so if you find yourself not being able to cope with everything some days, stop and think what is most important. Will it matter in 10 years time if you don't get that second load of washing on the line? Will the world end if you don't email that person back straight away? Or will you cherish the cuddles and special smiles you receive because you gave your children the attention they crave?

Use this time wisely and experience the real joys of watching your kids grow up .... and best of all HAVE FUN along the way!

How To Get Into Stanford With Your SAT And SAT II

By John Chang

The SAT test is well-known to all high school students. You'll need to get a good score if you want to attend Harvard.

In this article I will share two effective strategies for getting the best score possible on the SAT.

For one thing, you probably wonder just exactly how high your score has to be to get into Stanford or other schools like it.

Another thing you are sure to be concerned about is how you can get ready to take the SAT. Of course, you don't want to waste a lot of time and money on methods that may not work.

1. Naturally your goal is getting a high score. How high is high?

My best advice to you is to score 2100 on your SAT. Shoot for 700 across the board if you want to be accepted to an Ivy League school. Your application will not be looked upon favorably with anything less than a 700 on any given section.

Because I am an admissions officer, I know that applicants who score 2100+ are almost always accepted. The only reason an applicant with this sort of score would be rejected is extreme weakness in some other area. Weak transcripts would be an example of this.

2. Document your improvements. If you make a low score the first time you take the SAT, try again. Be sure to document your score each time, and of course, work hard to improve it each time.

Click here for more SAT test taking advice!

3. Of the two, ACT and SAT, preference is given to SAT.

Even though the ACT is a very good and very challenging test, if admissions officers must choose between two candidates who are equally qualified, they will look to see what kind of qualifications test the student took. The student who took the SAT will be chosen above the one who took the ACT every time.

When you begin preparing, focus on these two things: Take lots of sample tests. Start early!

1. Get an early start. As previously mentioned, you should take the PSAT at least one time before you take the NMSQT. This gives you a chance to practice without risk. While you are still in 7th grade, take the SAT for the Duke TIP also.

2. If you are considering taking a prep course, be careful of those that make extravagant claims. My parents paid a thousand dollars for me to take the Kaplan course when I was in high school. I really only remember one thing about that course. There were some flashcards that were very creative that helped me a bit with my vocabulary. Hardly a thousand dollars worth, though! Be sure to sit in on a few courses before deciding whether or not to pursue any.

3. Haunt your local bookstore to get copies of all the tests. Take as many sample tests as you can. You can get them all, from Princeton review to Barron's, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Taking sample tests will make a big difference to your score. The more comfortable you are with answering the types of questions asked on the test, the better your score will be.
