Baby Colics - A Few Pointers That Can Help Worried Parents

By Theresa Allison

Crying is the only way a baby knows to communicate and draw attention, as it is too young to chat yet. But don't worry because it's part of a baby's life, and don't overreact if it continues to cry, as there's zilch wrong with the baby. There is no reason for you to drive the baby to the hospital, as even the doctors will tell you that it's standard an is just an indication of the baby having colic.

The colic phase lasts for the first three weeks and then it passes away gradually, although it may seem to last longer. Fogeys should only concentrate on making it stop as it occurs due to a variety of reasons and may happen anytime. As a baby's biological clock is not like that of an adult, the colic phase can happen either early in the morning or in the afternoon or when the newly born is sleeping or in the night.

Even if a couple has allocated times of keeping awake, there might be many times when their sleep gets annoyed due to the baby and they are left feeling tired and knackered during the day. Do not think that by ignoring the crying baby, it will make it stop. One of the oldsters has to get up and check the baby's condition, change its nappies or feed it, and if it does not work then rock the baby in your arms and sing a lullaby to it. Always do not forget to burp the baby after breastfeeding it, as it is one of the known reasons for colic.

Remember to do the daily checks and if needed take the baby outside in its pram. A walk in the park along with the baby's pram will relax both the parent and the baby. A colic baby will stop crying if given a warm bath, as it relaxes and calms an infant; just ensure the water isn't hot for the baby's skin.

Toys which rotate and are musical can be hung on top of the crib, so that the baby keeps having a look at them and the soothing music and tones will help in relaxing the colic baby. They are cheap and help the little kid sleep.

The mum should keep a watch on what she eats, because there are some foods which can produce gas and can be passed on to the infant through the milk during breastfeeding. So she should have a concept about the foods to avoid. But if it fails, then Simethicone drops should be administered, but only as a last resort.

There will be good times and not so good times when raising a baby. The oldsters will have to face a large amount of challenges like the kid's colic phase, so keeping a babysitter during such a hard time will help a lot, but always remember that nothing can replace the love and caring of both the mum and the father.

Testing For Dyslexia

By Robert Johnson

Diagnosing dyslexia is not left to one single method. A number of different tests are used to identify dyslexia. The initial tests identify common symptoms. More detailed tests are required to measure the extent and type of dyslexia

If any primary symptoms of dyslexia are observed it is important to test the child at the onset of symptoms. The earlier a diagnosis is made the better. An early diagnosis can save a student years of frustration and learning problems. Testing of dyslexia is performed by educational psychologists.

Have your child's medical doctor check for medical problems that may contribute to symptoms of dyslexia. Once any medical condition is ruled out it is time to consult an educational psychologist.

Screening tests and comprehensive tests are the two types of tests used for diagnosing dyslexia. Screening tests are often used on large numbers of students to identify students who may have dyslexic symptoms. A comprehensive test is then administered to those students to find the extent of the learning disability and to try to determine the cause.

Advanced statistical formulas are used to measure symptoms of dyslexia. Having a standard of measure allows psychologists to determine the extent of the problem in any one child. Comprehensive tests cover visual acuity, reversal tests, sequencing, reading, spelling and general intelligence.

Comprehensive dyslexia tests are either done in person or long distance. It is best for the educational psychologist to conduct the test in person, that way they are able to meet and interact with the student. This gives them a lot of additional information. The unfortunate thing about long distance testing is that the expert never meets the individual.

Long distance tests usually contain objective and situational questions to which the student responds. The test is returned, the answers evaluated, the dyslexia symptoms measured, and a detailed report is sent back.

Fortunately, school districts in the U.S. are required by Federal law to test for dyslexia.
