On ADHD

By James Stanley

You may see a child who does not sit still; he wanders around most of the time. There are also children who have a short attention to almost anything.

You might think that it is normal for them because they are children. Well you are wrong; they must probably have a condition called the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or simply, ADHD.

It is characterized by the above descriptions, like having short attention span and hyperactivity. Not all kids have those manifestations. It is not just a mere condition; you have to be aware that it is a psychiatric disorder among children.

It affects mostly children but it has also a tendency to be carried on in to adulthood. Statistics show that in the beginning of the decade from year 2000, there has been a significant increase in the number of cases of ADHD in USA.

ADHD attacks mainly on the part of the brain that functions in solving problems, understanding, planning and attention. This can last for just a matter of months so it is considered curable.

But if left mismanaged, this condition may develop also to children until their adult stage and that would be another big problem. Also though children manifest this condition, not all of them have ADHD. If a child shows this behavior in a certain place, it may be due to his reaction to a school activity or to his friends, not from the disorder itself.

ADHD is confirmed when something happens to a child like death, divorce in the family or other changes, seizures, hearing problems caused by ear infections, school problems or depression.

There are many types of management that can be done to cure this disorder. One is through drugs which can control the childs hyperactivity. Another is Psychological therapy which includes behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and family therapy. Others include diet modifications and the trend called biofeedback which cures attention, impulsive and hyperactivity.

The thing is, ADHD is curable. Be observant with your children and have them checked up if something different is being manifested. it may cause injury if left untreated.
